The North East and North Yorkshire beaches awarded Blue Flag award by …

THIS Summer seven North East beaches and two North Yorkshire beaches will be flying a Blue Flag after receiving an award for the highest standard of quality of beach.

In total nine beaches across the North East and North Yorkshire have been presented with a Blue Flag award by Keep Britain Tidy.

The Blue Flag and Seaside Awards are aimed at improving the quality of England’s coastline in addition as promoting the country’s best beaches.

The award is an international award from Keep Britain Tidy presented on behalf of the Foundation for Environmental Education.

It is only presented to well-managed beaches with excellent water quality and environmental education programmes.

The Seaside Awards are presented to the best beaches in England and are aimed at celebrating the quality and varied of our coastlines.

Beaches are assessed on their safety and sets, environmental information, water quality – blue flag beaches need “excellent” water quality – and environmental management.

The seven beaches to receive the Blue Flag award in the North East are:

  • Tynemouth Longsands – North Tyneside MBC
  • King Edwards Bay – North Tyneside MBC
  • Whitley Bay – North Tyneside MBC
  • Saltburn by the Sea – Redcar and Cleveland Council
  • Roker – Sunderland Council
  • Seaburn – Sunderland Council
  • Sandhaven South Shields – South Tyneside Council

The beaches in the North East to receive a Seaside Award are:

  • Tynemouth Longsands – North Tyneside MBC
  • King Edwards Bay – North Tyneside MBC
  • Whitley Bay – North Tyneside MBC
  • Saltburn by the Sea – Redcar and Cleveland Council
  • Redcar Lifeboat Road – Redcar and Cleveland Council
  • Roker – Sunderland Council
  • Seaburn – Sunderland Council
  • Seaton Carew Central – Hartlepool Borough Council

Whitby beach

The two beaches to receive the Blue Flag award in North Yorkshire are:

  • Scarborough North Bay – Scarborough Borough Council
  • Whitby – Scarborough Borough Council

Some beaches in North Yorkshire were also presented with a seaside award:

  • Filey – Scarborough Borough Council
  • Runswick Bay – Scarborough Borough Council
  • Cayton Bay – Scarborough Borough Council
  • Robin Hoods Bay – Scarborough Borough Council
  • Scarborough South Bay – Scarborough Borough Council

Allison Ogden-Newton, Keep Britain Tidy’s chief executive, said that the “huge commitment” needed to “continue marvellous beaches worth of these awards cannot be underestimated.”

She additional: “The success of these beaches in reaching the very high standards demanded is testament to all those who have worked so hard to protect and enhance our blue spaces – from beach managers and volunteers to local residents and businesses.

“People who visit a beach flying a Blue Flag or Seaside Award can be assured the beach will be clean, safe and meet the highest environmental standards, in addition as international bathing water quality standards.”
