Christmas can be a difficult time for many people for a variety of reasons, and loneliness is one of them.

Research by Age UK revealed that nearly one million people aged over 65 do not have anyone to celebrate Christmas with this year.

According to data released by the Campaign to End Loneliness, 45 percent of adults feel sometimes, sometimes or often lonely in England. This equates to twenty five million people.

In an incredible act of generosity, several businesses and charities in North East Lincolnshire are demonstrating selflessness this Christmas Day by opening up their doors for local people who will be spending the day by themselves.

Here are all the businesses and charities in Grimsby and Cleethorpes that will be opening for free to people on their own on Christmas Day.

Cafe Baraka

Address: 8 Osborne Street, Cleethorpes, DN35 8LB

The Afro-Caribbean restaurant Cafe Baraka will provide a hot meal on Christmas Day to people who are on their own, completely free of charge.

In an Instagram post, the business wrote: “Don’t be alone this Christmas, use it at Cafe Baraka. 8 Osborne Street Cleethorpes. Hot meal served free of charge.”

Howlin’ Jacks Record Store

Address: 41a High Street, Cleethorpes, DN35 8JW

Howlin’ Jacks Record Store will be open from 10.30am to 12.30pm on December 25 for their ‘Christmas Day Hang Out’, where people can go and enjoy free coffee and mince pies. The business is running the event alongside the charity CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably).

They wrote in a social media post: “Christmas Day can be a tough time. If you or anyone you know would like some company or maybe you just want to increasing rapidly the day, why not pop in for a chat and listen to some records.”

A spokesperson told GrimsbyLive: “If you or anyone you know finds things tough on Christmas Day and would like to pop in for a chat and to listen to some tunes we are open. There is also free coffee and cakes.”

Grimsby Food Kitchen

Address: 18 Cleethorpe Road, Grimsby, DN31 3LB

From 12pm-1.30pm on Christmas Day, staff at Grimsby Food Kitchen will be cooking Christmas dinners for their service users – but they said anyone who will be on their own are welcome to a hot dinner.

A staff member said: “We wouldn’t see anyone go hungry but it’s only a small place, so we would have to take names – but if anyone is alone, I wouldn’t turn them away if they are struggling, alone and need some company. I wouldn’t refuse anyone a hot meal if they are struggling.”

Creative Start CIC – The reappearance

Creative Start CIC will be opening its doors to recovering addicts who have found themselves alone on Christmas Day and are in need of sustain. They will also accept bookings from elderly people who are on their own to enjoy their Christmas buffet at 5.00pm. This will be followed by games.

We Are ONE Foundation

Address: St Andrews Church Hall, 2B Albion Street, Grimsby, DN32 7DY

Based at the St Andrews Church Hall, the We are ONE Foundation will be serving breakfast buns/wraps and hot drinks from 7.00am until 12.00pm on Christmas Day. This service will be chiefly for people who are experiencing financial hardship.

Alternatively, drop in to one of the sessions with proof of financial hardship – this can be in the form of a recent letter from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) showing entitlement to a method-tested assistance, a bank statement or proof of current bank balance.
